As GPs, specialists, and medical students we have a duty of care to raise the alarm when the community’s health is threatened.

The Morrison Government’s call for a gas-led post-Covid recovery flies in the face of clear evidence that gas poses an unacceptable risk to our health and that of our loved ones.

Gas is a fossil fuel driving climate change

Gas, which is mostly methane is not clean; it’s highly polluting.

Gas is not a ‘transition’ fuel away from fossil fuels; it further entrenches our dependence on fossil fuels.

Australia will soon be the biggest exporter of LNG gas, as well as being the largest coal exporter.

Yet the extraction, liquefaction, transport and combustion of gas has the potential to result in as much greenhouse gas as burning coal.

The dangers of our rising emissions that drive climate change are becoming more and more apparent.

We experienced the force of the climate crisis during the summer’s heat, horrific bushfires and smoke pollution that for weeks choked so many of our towns and cities.

Fracking harms

Both conventional gas and unconventional gas extraction -known as “fracking”- harm Australians in other ways.

Extracting gas produces contaminated water, which contains naturally occurring substances such as mercury and radionuclides, and in the case of fracked wells, chemical additives.

Some of these chemicals have been found to be toxic to our health. They pollute our land, including productive farming land, and aquifers.

Gas mining reduces air quality to local communities, who also suffer physical and psychological health impacts.

Accelerating new and expanding existing gas developments makes no sense, especially when we have viable, healthy alternatives

Solar and wind energy will lower our emissions and improve our environment and health.

Renewables are also cheaper than gas, and will boost jobs and the economy. Ernst and Young (EY 2020) have identified that investment in the renewable energy sectors would yield three times as many full-time jobs as those in the fossil fuel sectors.

This year we have lived through bushfires and a pandemic, worsened by the impacts of climate change. We have seen the government respond to science and the advice of health professionals in its COVID response. Our recovery from COVID must also be sustainable, and not driven by fossil fuels.

Despite increasing concerns from health professionals and the general public, the government is moving towards a gas lead recovery. Gas is a fossil fuel which would only increase carbon emissions, and place an unacceptable risk of harm to the health of our communities.

Add your voice to doctors' urgent calls to #TurnOffTheGas due to its harmful impacts on human health by signing the letter below. The letter will be sent to Prime Minister Scott Morrisons' Office by the upcoming budget date of 6th October.

Dear Prime Minister ,

Australia has listened to the experts and has done well to manage the pandemic medical emergency.

We urge you to also listen to the health and climate experts who are telling us that a "gas-led recovery" is not a safe way forward for our country. More gas extraction, both for domestic use and for export, will raise global carbon dioxide and methane levels even higher.

As one of the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, Australia cannot afford to be adding large amounts of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere. Drought, bushfires, coastal erosion, extreme heat waves, and changing patterns of disease are just some of the effects of the climate emergency we face, and have health, economic and social consequences.

The interests of the gas industry should not be put ahead of Australians whose health and wellbeing depends on a liveable climate.

Please prioritise renewable energy solutions which do not pose a threat to our health and that of our families, not the false promise of another fossil fuel.
